A very unusual double strike
Lot 62
SICILY. Entella (?). Punic issues, circa 300-289 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 16.81 g, 12 h). Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. 𐤌𐤇𐤑𐤁𐤌 ('mhsbm' = 'Quaestors' or 'Paymasters' in Punic) Head of a horse to left; behind, palm tree with two date clusters; to left, club. Jenkins, Punic, 330 (O107/R270). Minor roughness on the obverse and the reverse heavily double struck, otherwise, very fine.

From a European collection, formed before 2005.

Double strikes are very rare on these Punic tetradrachms, especially ones as dramatic as on our example, where the upper part of the horse’s head is overlain by a second mane and palm branch.
